Planning guides

Resolve the things that meet the worktop.

A sink, hob or splashback affects more than the look of a worktop. Put the exact components and junction details in the same brief, so the fabricator can identify what needs checking.

Name the sink and mounting arrangement

Include the sink manufacturer, model and intended mounting type. If you want to reuse an existing sink, say so and ask whether its condition and fixing arrangement need inspecting first.

Add the tap model and any extra accessories that need openings. Keep the product instructions available for the appointed trades. A catalogue photograph alone may leave important dimensions unclear.

Keep appliance information current

Record the hob model and give the prospective fabricator its installation requirements. Tell the kitchen designer and installer if the chosen appliance changes, especially after the plan has been measured.

Ask who coordinates disconnection and reconnection. Worktop installation and appliance work may have different responsibilities and costs; the written scope should make those clear.

Choose the wall junction deliberately

Decide whether you are considering a low upstand, a full-height panel or retaining an existing tiled wall. Note sockets, window reveals and corners that need to be discussed.

Ask how final wall dimensions and openings will be confirmed, and whether the splashback follows a separate measurement or installation stage. Include the agreed wall treatment in your project enquiry.

If the cabinets are staying, use the replacement worktop checklist to record the existing junctions and what you want to reuse.

Common questions

Should I buy a new sink before speaking to a fabricator?

Shortlist the model and discuss its fit and installation requirements first. Ask when the actual sink needs to be available before placing an order.
